Peppol is a global network that enables businesses and governments to exchange electronic documents such as invoices, orders, and catalogues. Originally developed for European public procurement, Peppol has expanded worldwide and is now the preferred e-invoicing network in many countries.
Peppol started as an EU-funded project in 2008 and became operational in 2012. It is now governed by OpenPeppol, an international non-profit association. The network operates in over 39 countries and processes billions of transactions annually.
To use Peppol, organizations need: a Peppol ID (based on their business identifier like VAT number), a connection through a certified Peppol Access Point, and the ability to send/receive documents in Peppol BIS formats. The four-corner model means sender and receiver each connect through their own Access Point.
Connecting to Peppol typically involves: selecting a Peppol Access Point provider, registering your Peppol ID, integrating your ERP or accounting system, and testing the connection. Many ERP vendors offer built-in Peppol connectivity or certified add-ons.
Peppol simplifies e-invoicing by providing a single connection point for reaching thousands of trading partners. Instead of managing multiple formats and connections, businesses can exchange documents with any Peppol participant worldwide using standardized formats.
